Winter has only just begun and I lay on the bed, staring out the window on a chilly afternoon. My eyes are fixed on the Peepal trees that stand tall on the edge of the road – their leaves dance to the tunes of the wind. There is something different about the way Peepal leaves move. Each individual leaf spins on its own, while the leaves of other trees only rustle. Ever noticed?
Peepal leaves look like a chaos of pinwheels. Especially in the winters where the deep green turns blushing pink. Come wind, whirl they go.
Winter in a city like Mumbai is pleasant. Others might not even think of it as winter, but for us, this is it. The sun isn’t harsh, the trees change their colour, maybe shed a few leaves here and there. It’s a delightful time for the birds too! Robins and Sparrows hopping from one branch to the other, add to the beauty of it.
A cold breeze makes its way through the window, sending a shiver down my spine. I get up to close the window, but contemplate. No, I decide. I’d rather settle with my blanket. Somewhere in the middle of chilling happiness and the lullaby of the pinwheels, I drift away to wonderland.
